Most of us get through Grades 1 through 8 pretty well. We chose various curriculums, go at our own pace, and often decide we don't need to test our kids (why bother - we're with them every day - we know how they're doing!). Give grades - who needs them?? We do either a standardized test or an annual portfolio review, and we're satisfied that our kids are learning. Homeschooling's great, right?! We can do things our way!
But then...shudder...along comes high school. And now, if our kids want to go to college, we'll have to march to a different tune. We'll have to plan the high school years to match what the college recruiters are looking for! Yes, grades, transcripts, SATs and more have to become part of our daily lexicon.
When I first started learning about homeschooling high school my head was spinning in 20 different directions at once, and I thought "there's no way I can do this!" But after a lot of reading, web surfing, and talking to homeschool moms who have completed the journey, I'm beginning to think it might just be possible! (my oldest is in Grade 8 right now).
This part of the web site will be a work-in-progress over the next years as my family prepares for and then enters the high school years. As I learn, I'll share with you. I welcome, no - beg for input from those of you who are already homeschooling high school (or have finished). I'd love to post your words of advice up here on our PSG web site. I'd also love to hear of success stories from any former PSG kids who have made it into college. If you have a PSG graduate who has made it into college, please email us and let us know about them, what college they're attending and any words of wisdom you can share (first names only will be posted - no last names).
I've found one amazing book that really lays things out clearly for Florida high school homeschoolers. I highly recommend it. Author Joanne Mastronicola put together a binder about everything you need to know to homechool high school in Florida called Piecing Together the High School Puzzle. It can be purchased online from R.O.C.K. Solid.
