  • Angelica, now age 22, spent two years at community college before entering and graduating (with honors) from Sweet Briar College in Lynchburg, VA. in 2006.   She received a $15,000/year academic scholarship while there, and worked as a tutor and then in the office of the president writing for the school website for a work-study job. Now she works for a healthcare lobby in Washington D.C. , and considers where to study for her master’s degree.  We made our own transcripts.
  • Domenica, age 19, spent two years at community college before entering the Navy ROTC program (full scholarship) at the University of South Carolina where she is working toward a 4 year degree in nursing. We made our own transcripts.

With our third student “graduated” and full time at the community college, and another entering the college system next fall, we have found it is easier to keep an informal, running list going on the home computer for the four years of high school that includes:

·        all their service projects

·        any awards earned

·        any sports and extracurricular activities participated in  (including summer jobs)

It helps to add to the list throughout the year –- rather than trying to remember at the year’s end -- and then we compile that in an orderly manner, along with:

·        the subjects studied (including as a dual enrolled student)

·        the texts used

·        grades given by us, and those given by the college

·        the community college transcripts

So far, that has been accepted by the colleges they have applied to.  We also keep copies of letters from coaches, enrichment class teachers, etc. to include.  We have our students take the SAT test at least twice, once at the end of their sophomore year, and again at the end of their junior year.  We find that it is helpful to search out contests and exhibits our students can participate in, as there are limited areas of recognition in the homeschool arena, and this allows the transcript to look well-rounded (as well as encourages the student in the areas they are passionate about, such as writing, music and art).

We do not have produce any brainiacs that ace the SAT’s and land Harvard Scholarships, just average, hard working kids. Neither parent holds a 4 year degree. I must say that it is satisfying to see that homeschoolers actually do make it into fine colleges, and perform well, as self-directed learners

Our Senior, Class of 2008 is Sarah. She has been homeschooled since second grade, and we have used a variety of curricula and approached over the years. If  I had it to do over, I think I would have been a little more structured throughout since we are catching up last minute.

Sarah has participated in CHAA all along, serving with Rick as Coach for the last 3 years. She loves it, and has found her life's calling.  Of course, Sports really are her passion. She has participated with South Florida HEAT in Track & Field, Cross Country and Soccer, and been very successful. She has been offered a scholarship at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas to play soccer there, but in all honesty, she is still undecided, since she would prefer something closer to home. She has also been accepted at Auburn University.  She plans on studying Physical Education, or Sports Management, and hopes to Coach a high school sport as her career.

My main tip: Pray for the Lord to give vision, passion and opportunity. My prayer since starting hsing Carolyn in first grade  has always been that He will equip both my children with exactly what He already knows they will need and to give them a passion for serving Him and contentment in nothing else. It is a comfort to see that clearly developing in both of my children.
