CHARLOTTE MASON

Charlotte Mason was a 19th century educator who saw education as a life process.  In the Charlotte Mason method "living books" and first-hand sources are used instead of textbooks.  Narrating back what they have learned also plays a big role.

LITERATURE BASED

Sonlight Curriculum is a very popular literature based curriculum.  Even if you don't choose to go with Sonlight, I'd recommend getting one of their catalogs, as they have great book recommendations.  To quote from their website:

Sonlight's "secret" really comes down to this: we believe that most children respond more positively to great literature than they do to textbooks. Books -- quality books -- can distill the wisdom of an entire life into the span of a few pages. They can feed us with spiritual insight beyond imagination. Whether written by Christians or non- Christians, great books help us to develop critical thinking skills. They cause us to question the validity of our own values and beliefs in light of the author's perspective.

UNSCHOOLING

There are numerous definitions of "unschooling".  John Holt is generally considered the father of unschooling.  Generally, children are given the freedom to choose what they will learn (interest-based learning).  There is no specific curriculum, text books or lesson plans.  Learning happens anywhere and everywhere.  Children are encouraged to be self-learners.  The love of learning is encouraged.
